Green Place Ranch
Green Place Ranch raises natural grassfed beef in SouthWest Colorado on the Uncompaghre Plateau.
We are a sustainable operation using solar power for all of our infrastructure requirements. This includes water pumping, ranch headquarters, home and office. We practice rotational grazing on the 320 acre ranch and on the 4,500 acres of grazing surrounding the ranch.
We raise our beef using only pasture and ranch raised stored forage (hay). We use no chemical fertilizers, herbicides, hormones, grain or grain based feed in raising these animals. We do not confinement feed, and all of our animals are raised in a low stress, open environment.
We sell halves and wholes directly to our customers, with processing by both state- and USDA-inspected facilities, as chosen by the customer. We deliver to the processor and the customer picks up their order when ready.
We are based on Colorado’s Western Slope and are happy to serve customers within a 300 mile radius. We have our own USDA approved label (granted in May of 2007) and are providing selected local (our 300 mile radius) natural and health food stores with our products on a piece/cut basis.
Individual customers will enjoy a considerable discount from piece prices by purchasing by the half or whole. If you wish to buy a half, we can match you up with another customer that also wishes a half. We are also now selling Beef Paks in $250 and $500 orders. These are an assortment of ground beef and primal cuts, steaks and roasts.
We are just now beginning construction of the first of 6 greenhouses, 30′ X 40′ each, in which we will be raising clean healthy produce and we will also have eggs, chickens and turkeys this year to be offered at the Montrose Farmers market or available from the ranch directly to the customer on a pre-order/pick-up basis.
Give us a call for more information. We generally have a couple of animals available at any given time, or available within a reasonable pre-order time.
Pasture Raised Grass Fed Beef in Colorado: The Green Place Ranch is located about 12 miles west of Montrose, Colorado and southwest of Olathe, CO . GPR raises natural grass fed beef for your table, and the hay on the ranch for winter feeding, without use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides, herbicides or antibiotics. During grazing season, rotational grazing is employed to allow for re-growth and variety.
Spring of 2018. It looks like another drought year, not much snowpack for irrigation from snow melt water. I’d put our snow level on the Uncompaghre Plateau at less than 50% and it’ll be fortunate if some ponds are able to be filled. All we can hope for is a rainy spring and summer. In the meantime, it’s mild conditions for calving and that’s what’s happening for the time being.. Orders are being filled (use our order form) for halves and wholes of beef. There is a limited selection to choose from and the ranch is happy to hear from you again if you’re getting ready to restock your freezer or, if you’re new to the process, give a call and we’ll walk you through it. Thanks to all our old and new customers for supporting our endeavors to raise good clean food. It was a dry summer last year. A little rain (pray for rain!) or snow here and there really helps with the forages. GPR reduced the animal numbers last year and did so pre-emptively. This took the herd down to the best animals and was difficult, of course, knowing each animal that’s raised on the ranch but it was the right decision at the time (again). It will likely be several years in recovery and result in the betterment of the operation. Time will tell whether the right moves were made or not and your support of the ranch, by letting GPR provide you with good beef, enables the work to continue. The Murray Grey bull threw some nice solid calves and everyone looks good.
In the past two years further improvements have been made with the spring water distribution system and more cross fencing to better utilize the grazing cycles in the future. GPR worked with the NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service) on a comprehensive irrigation system five years ago for the upper 100 acres and finished digging the mile-long ditch and laying 12″ underground pressure line for the system. In addition, the water line from the spring on the ranch (the only water source for miles around) was extended all the way to the bottom of the ranch and has filled the biggest pond on the place year round. Because of the herd reduction, right now there are more elk than cows in the fields. Morning might find you waking to the sight of an elk herd in the field or some wild turkeys acting as your alarm clock. You can ride a horse or mountain bike or hike from here to Utah and not touch a piece of private ground. The Roubideau Wilderness Study Area is within a couple of miles from the ranch and stretches from the top to the bottom of the Uncompahgre Plateau. The area is rich with stories and evidence of the past and full of hiking, riding and mountain biking opportunities.
The 2017 harvest was a good year, albeit with reduced productivity due to lack of moisture, as was 2016. Some new friends were made and there were chances to catch up with the ones already known. GPR has a limited selection of fine animals that have reached target weight, so if you would like to reserve/order a half or whole now, give a call. Call or e-mail to make arrangements for your order. Other animals come to maturity throughout the season, so give a call to ask about availability. If you would like to get on GPR’s list of buyers, give a call or send an email. You may visit the ranch from Mid-May through Mid-December if you wish. Plan on a pick-up date for the halves or wholes after two weeks of aging. Bon Apetite!
We are also now selling Beef Paks in $250 and $500 orders. These are an assortment of ground beef and primal cuts, steaks and roasts.
